Where are you located?

CHER is located just east of Toronto in Oshawa, Ontario

How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

CHER’s sponsorship fees are very low at only $27.00 per month.

Is the sponsorship fee higher for a child in an orphanage or boarding school?

Yes and no – you have the choice.  Because the child has no support other than what is given at the orphanage, the cost of care is higher.  This means that each child needs double the amount of sponsorship.  Sponsors have the choice of either paying $27.00 a month as one of two sponsors, or paying $54.00 a month as the sole sponsor of a child.

How much does CHER use for administration?

Answer: CHER operates on a shoestring budget with just one paid part-time employee to handle the daily operations who manages the office from home to eliminate the cost of office rental.  Office supplies, phone bills, and high postal costs are some of the necessary expenses that require payment.

Your $27.00 a month is used as follows:
$24.03 Sponsorship for your child
$2.97 11% for CHER operational expenses

Any gift money goes right into the gift account with no deductions.
General donations to projects have 11% deducted for operational expenses.
General donations over $1,000.00 have only 5% deducted for operational expenses.

How are funds managed once they are sent to the project?

Sponsors send in a monthly donation which is sent to the specific project quarterly throughout the year (4 times a year).  This money is sent to the project only after CHER receives a signed report verifying the attendance of all sponsored children.  The funds are sent via bank draft or wire transfer to a specific established contact at the project who oversees the correct handling of the funds.

How do I pay my fees?

There are several options available.  We accept personal cheques, money orders, or post-dated personal cheques in the sum of monthly, quarterly, or yearly payments.  [Monthly: $27.00. Quarterly: $81.00.  Yearly: $324.00].  We also offer pre-approved payment services where your donations can be debited from your chequing account automatically each month.  We also accept visa and mastercard.

At the end of each quarter, you will receive a statement (it is not a bill) so you may keep track of your past donations.

Are the donations tax-deductible?

Absolutely!  CHER is a registered Canadian non-profit organization so any donations made are tax-deductible.  A charitable donations tax receipt will be issued by the end of February for any donations made and received by December 31st of the previous year.

Do only Seventh-day Adventist children qualify for this program?

Definitely not!  CHER accepts any children regardless of race or religion and also endeavors to sponsor an equal number of boys and girls in this program.  Poor families bring their children to these schools and often beg for assistance in educating their children because they have no means to do so themselves.

How long is my sponsorship commitment to my assigned child?

It is the current policy and mandate of CHER to sponsor children from kindergarten to Grade 12 graduation in all our schools and from birth to Grade 12 graduation in all of our orphanages or rehabilitation centers.

What if my circumstances change and I can’t continue with my sponsorship?

It is beneficial if each sponsor and child to remain together for as long as possible; however, sometimes circumstances arise that cause either the sponsor or child to discontinue with the CHER sponsorship program.  If a sponsor must discontinue, it is highly recommended that CHER be notified at least two quarters (6 months) before sponsorship funding is depleted.

Is it possible to send birthday and Christmas gifts to my child?

Yes – the preferred method is through the CHER Gift Fund.  It is recommended that sponsors donate an additional $20.00 for Christmas and $20.00 for birthday gifts for each sponsored child.  It is not a requirement.  The money is accumulated into a general fund which is distributed equally among the schools (based on number of children attending) at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarter.  Those in charge use their knowledge of the children and make purchases of something either the child needs or that will make the child’s heart happy.  This method ensures fair treatment for each child.

If you do wish to send your child a gift rather than contributing to the gift fund, you are welcome to do so, however, it is suggested that you be creative in your choice and find things like coloring books that will fit in flat packages.

Also, always use the CHER mailing address as your return address and never use your full family name on any correspondence to avoid possible harassment.  Follow the instructions for packaging described in the information package you receive when you become a sponsor.

Never send money directly to the project.

Can I write to my child?

You are encouraged to write to your child as often as you like for this is a source of great joy, pride, and encouragement to him/her.  Contact the CHER office for the name of the contact at your child’s project.

Are there any general funds that I can donate to, rather than to sponsor a specific child?

Yes, this kind of sponsorship is appreciated very much and is very gratefully received.  Please donate when and whatever amount you can – no amount is too large or too small.  Tax-deductible receipts are issued at the end of each year for all donations received.

Every project in each of the countries has a general fund that you can donate to, or you may choose to donate to CHER’s general administration budget, or to the Children’s Greatest Needs Fund.  This fund provides a bridge between sponsors when a sponsor is unable to continue with his/her commitment and a new sponsor takes over.

What is CHER’s greatest need?

More sponsors like you!
